Celebrating the Heart of Koala Conservation Australia: Our Volunteers. Meet Paul

In 2026, we’re proud to celebrate International Volunteer Year by shining a light on the people who make our work possible — our extraordinary volunteers.

Behind every safe enclosure, repaired gate, working tool, and well-maintained space at Koala Conservation Australia is a dedicated team of volunteers helping everything run smoothly behind the scenes — and Paul Smith is one of them.

After a long career in technical and operational roles, including managing telecommunications services and working at one of Australia’s most significant global events, Paul now brings his skills to Koala Conservation Australia’s maintenance team. For the past two years, he has quietly ensured that our facilities remain safe and functional for koalas, staff, volunteers, and visitors alike.

We sat down with Paul to learn more about his journey into volunteering and what being part of the KCA community means to him.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at KCA

I’m retired now and come from a technical and mechanical background. These days, I volunteer in maintenance at KCA, helping with repairs, upkeep, and any jobs needed to keep things running safely and smoothly.

How long have you been volunteering with KCA?

Two years.

Why did you start volunteering at KCA?

After retiring, I wanted to give back, and volunteering felt like a meaningful way to do that.

What is your background or experience outside of KCA?

I worked as a Service Manager with Telstra and was the venue manager for the International Broadcast Centre during the Sydney Olympics. I’ve also worked in lab management, asset management — and even coffee testing along the way.

Were you new to the area when you joined? Has volunteering helped you meet new people?

I’ve lived in the area for 26 years, but volunteering has definitely helped me meet new people and connect more with the community.

Are you able to use your skills in your volunteer role?

Yes — my technical background is directly useful in maintenance work.

What’s something people don’t realise about volunteering at KCA?

The people.

What does your role involve day to day?

Any maintenance jobs that need doing around the site.

What’s the most rewarding part of volunteering?

Seeing increasing koala numbers and helping build knowledge within the community.

How does your role help support koala conservation?

By ensuring safety for wildlife, volunteers, and staff.

What does being part of this community mean to you?

Being surrounded by people who want to conserve the environment and help Australian wildlife.

What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering at KCA?

Just do it.

Volunteers like Paul play a vital role in koala conservation — often working quietly behind the scenes to ensure everything functions safely and efficiently. Every repaired structure, maintained space, and completed task helps support the bigger mission: protecting koalas and the habitats they depend on.

Thank you, Paul, for everything you do to help keep Koala Conservation Australia moving forward.
