Construction of the new Port Macquarie Koala Hospital continued to progress strongly throughout November, with key design, approval and construction milestones achieved.
The project remains on track for delivery in 2026, with close coordination occurring between Koala Conservation Australia, AW Edwards, National Parks and the NSW Government - Infrastructure NSW.
Over the past month, the project team has:
- Erected major structural components, including structural steel and lightweight wall framing, with roof insulation, metal sheeting, flashings and capping now underway.
Made strong progress on rehabilitation yard slabs and completed the majority of footings for the raised walkway. - Advanced key statutory approvals, including the DA Modification, which remains with Council for expected approval in December, and the Review of Environmental Factors (Rev 7) submitted to National Parks on 6 November.
- Continued development of the Visitor Experience, with wayfinding signage now submitted for National Parks review, volunteer interviews underway and detailed design work nearing completion.
- Hosted NSW Public Works, on behalf of NSW Government, for a site inspection on 20 November, with positive feedback on construction progress and site management.
Looking ahead, December and early New Year will see several important milestones, including:
- Approval of the DA Modification and REF for works on National Parks land.
- Finalisation of the Visitor Experience detailed design
- Submission of the Exhibit Koala Yards documentation for licensing approval.
- Continued construction progress, including installation of windows, external pathways, skylights, roof access hatches and fall-safe systems.
The project remains within its Restart NSW budget allocation, with strong governance, safety and environmental management in place. Schedule remains achievable for an opening in 2026.
Koala Conservation Australia, AW Edwards and project partners thank neighbours and the community for their continued patience and support as we move through the exciting phase of construction for this world-class koala care and education facility.
