Port Macquarie Koala Hospital Redevelopment Update - January 2026

Port Macquarie Koala Hospital Redevelopment Update - January 2026
Construction of the new Port Macquarie Koala Hospital continued to progress well throughout December and January, with a number of key approvals finalised and visible construction milestones achieved. The project remains on track for delivery in 2026, with close coordination continuing between Koala Conservation Australia, AW Edwards, National Parks and the NSW Government – Infrastructure NSW.

Over the past month, the project team has:
  • Achieved approval of works on National Parks land, with the Review of Environmental Factors determined in December.
  • Received Council approval for the approved Development Application modification, allowing works to continue as planned. These approvals allow construction to continue as planned, with no changes to the approved building footprint or overall use of the site.
  • Completed installation of windows and glazing, along with roof elements.
  • Progressed external pathways around the building and advanced works on the raised walkway structure.
  • Completed internal services rough-in (plumbing, electrical and mechanical), with additional quality inspections by consultant team undertaken prior to internal wall linings.
  • Continued detailed coordination of the Visitor Experience, including wayfinding signage submissions, final content reviews and procurement progressing following design approval.
The project team also hosted NSW Public Works in December for a regular site inspection on behalf of the NSW Government. Feedback on construction progress, safety and site management was positive.
Looking ahead, the coming month will see:
  • Continued external works, including wall cladding and pathway completion.
  • Internal linings, finishes and fit-off commencing progressively across the building.
  • Ongoing construction of the raised walkway and staff facilities.
  • Submission and finalisation of remaining licensing documentation for the koala exhibit yards.
The project remains within its Restart NSW budget allocation, with strong governance, safety and environmental controls in place. While construction programs naturally adjust as works progress, the overall schedule remains achievable for an opening in 2026.

Koala Conservation Australia, AW Edwards and project partners thank neighbours and the broader community for their continued patience and support as construction progresses on this important koala care, conservation and education facility.
